Residents protest construction of Itare Dam
Tension remains high in Molo, Nakuru County after locals blocked the access to the multi-billion Itare Dam Water Project saying the government has failed to honour its promise to compensate them after they were displaced to create space for the dam.
The residents who engaged police in running battles early Saturday blocking the road used by tractors belonging to the construction company also accused the contractor of sidelining them in the hiring of casual labourers to work in the project.
Kuresoi North MP, Moses Cheboi, and Nakuru County Deputy Governor, Joseph Ruto, held a closed door meeting with the company officials to try to stem the discontent from the public.
They duo have since urged the residents to remain calm as they pursue the matter.
Rift Valley Water Services Board Chairman, John Kitilit, who also visited the site after the protests, assured residents that talks to resolve the issue were ongoing.
The multi-billion Itare dam is facing a myriad of problems including both official opposition led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the local Myoot Kipsigis Council of Elders who have vehemently opposed the construction of the dam saying it will affect the ecosystem and flow of water in the River Nile.
