Residents take up govts role in repairing road in Baringo

Hundreds of residents in Kapropita Ward, Baringo County turned up on Monday morning to repair Riwo-Bogoirin Road due to failure by the county government to reconstruct the shabby the road.

The locals used boulders and sand to make the road passable.

Area residents lamented that they have waited for so long for the county government to fix the road, forcing them to take matters into their own hands and ensure the road is in good condition.

“Our leaders have been giving us empty promises for long and we have decided enough is enough,” said Musa Kiptoo, an agitated resident who has been driving on the said road for 13 years.

”Politicians only come during funerals and campaign time to give us false promises which are never fulfilled after they get into power.”said Musa Kiptoo.

Onescar Tuitoek, a youth representative, questioned how the money for the road reconstruction was used as every financial year money is allocated but no progress had been witnessed.

”They have allocated a total of five million shillings for the road that is a 12 km stretch and that will not be enough,” said Tuitoek.

”This place does very good with fruits but the problem arises when we want to ferry the goods to the market since the road is inaccessible,” said Regina Keitany, a fruit vendor.

She further lamented that women in the area especially expectant mothers suffer a lot as they are sometimes forced to deliver on the road and end up developing complications.

”We are giving the county leadership two weeks ultimatum to act or else we will block the main road linking Kabarnet and Marigat,” Elphas Bolei another resident said.
