Restaurant apologises over breastfeeding saga

The management of Nairobi’s Olive Restaurant on Tuesday apologised for the mistreatment of a mother who was banned from breastfeeding her child inside the premises.

Addressing protesters who had marched to the hotel, Moses K. Wambua, the manager, failed to identify the female waiter accused of asking the customer to go breastfeed in the toilet but assured that the facility is investigating.

He promised that once identified, the offending employee will be fired.

“I wish the aggrieved woman would come and point out for us the accused,” Wambua told the protesters.

Wambua, who had a hard time explaining himself over the chants, however indicated that the hotel has since established a nursing room in the premises.

A pro-breastfeeding demonstration by the Women of Kenya on behalf of their children marched across the city carrying banners while singing and chanting. They condemned the incident terming it an infringement on basic human rights.

“We will not breastfeed our babies in washrooms!” they chanted.

The group, led by County health representative Esther Kwamboka, also presented a petition to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and the Nairobi County Government.

The women further demanded that the right of babies to breastfeed be a priority in public and private spaces.

“We call for action to be taken against those who infringe the rights to breastfeed,” said one of the protesters.

Taking to Twitter, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris also condemned the incident.

“Standing in solidarity with those who are demonstrating today for the rights of mothers to breastfeed their babies without discrimination,” she tweeted.
