Results of 1,205 KCSE students cancelled

Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) chairperson Prof. George Magoha on Wednesday revealed that the results of 1205 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE) candidates who sat last year’s exam were cancelled.

Speaking during a press conference at KNEC headquarters, Prof. Magoha noted that nine out of ten examination centres alleged to have been involved in examination malpractice were found guilty of cheating.

“There were allegations of exam malpractice in 10 schools whose results were withheld. However, all the candidates accused of collusion in one school have been cleared after investigations and their results have been released,” said Prof. Magoha.

Prof. Magoha revealed that in most of the examination centres, candidates had either carried unauthorised material into the examination room or colluded which prompted KNEC action.

He noted that after the council’s investigations, all candidates except one in two schools were found guilty of collusion.

Prof. Magoha said that in two institutions, only two students out of 300 received their results. He also highlighted that the results of 752 students in four schools have been cancelled after also being found guilty of engaging in massive examination irregularities.

He further noted that in 10 examination centres, 11 students were found to be in possession of mobile phones.

The KNEC boss also said that in eight examination centres, candidates were found to have written similar but wrong responses to questions meaning that they colluded.

According to him, in the ten centres accused to have accused of having engaged in malpractice, nine students smuggled unauthorised material in the exam room.

He sent a stern warning to students saying the council will not tolerate exam cheating.

The career educationist however said that the council has handed a lifeline to the students whose results were cancelled saying that they will be allowed to sit this year’s exams.

He encouraged them to register for KCSE 2018 adding that registration closes on February, 28
