Retired President Moi Turns 90

Daniel Arap Moi served as Kenya’s 2nd President from 1978 to 2002, rulling Kenya for 24 years.

He also served as Kenya’s 3rd vice president from 1967 to 1978

Moi is popularly known to Kenyans as "Nyayo", a swahili word for "footsteps", which he often said he was following the footsteps of the first President.

Moi entered politics in 1955 where he was the elected member of the Legislative council of Rift valley.

He also founded Kenya Africa Democratic Union (KADU) alongside Ronald Ngala to challenge the Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) led by the first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

He is remembered for introducing free milk programs for school children, which was popularly known as “Maziwa Ya Nyayo”.

Among other things he did during his leadership was release all political detainees and abolished land-buying companies that had been gouging small land holders.

Moi is remembered for his authoritative ruling and his tough nature during his leadership.

The former president will mark his 90th year with a party at his Kabarak home in Nakuru.
