Revealed: List of Hawalas Facing Closure over Terrorism Allegations

Hawalas have been used, especially by the Somali Community, to transfer billions of shillings locally.

The decision was informed by intelligence reports that the service was being used by terror financiers to fund terror activities in the country.

LIST OF HAWALAS

The Hawalas that are facing closure include: Amal Money Transfer, Dahabshil Money Transfer Ltd, Tawakal Money Transfer Ltd, Bakaal Express Money Transfer Ltd, Juba Express Money Transfer Ltd, Iftin Express Money Transfer Ltd, Hodan Global Money Remittance and Exchange, Amana Money Transfer Ltd, Kaah Money Transfer Ltd, Continental Money Transfer Ltd, Kendy Money Transfer Ltd, Flex Money Transfer Ltd and the UAE Exchange Money Remittance Ltd.

It is alleged that international terror groups are sending money to their local networks using the service and their closure is meant to cripple the terror cells in the country.

The drastic action was occasioned by the dawn Garissa University terror attack that say 148 people lose their lives.

Following the attack, the government on Sunday bombed two key Al-Shabaab bases in Somalia.

Hawalas are informal international money transfer systems that enable people to receive money locally through a network of lenders and business people who rely on their reputation, rather than formal contracts.

POPULAR SERVICE

The system has been described as the transfer of money without actually moving it.

It is very popular with business men in Eastleigh and other trading centers that are dominated by members of the Somali community.

The government has urged them to use formal banking services that are Sharia compliant and regulated by the central Bank of Kenya.

Meanwhile, political leaders from the North Eastern part of the country have promised to expose suspected members of the Al-Shabaab terror group in Mandera, Garissa and Wajir Counties.
