Rio Scandal: Olympic great Kipchoge Keino off the hook as he turns State witness

Former Olympic champion Kipchoge Keino is off the prosecution hook over the 2016 Rio Scandal after he turned into a state witness.

This means Keino will now be a state witness against former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario and others who have been charged with impropriety in the Rio Olympics scam.

This was after the prosecution, before trial magistrate Douglas Ogoti, told the court in Milimani, Nairobi that the Office of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will not charge him and will instead make him a prosecution witness in the case.

Keino, through his advocate, had earlier written to the DPP requesting that his plea taking be deferred for one week to enable authorities look further into the matter.

The former athlete claimed that as chairperson of the National Olympics Committee -Kenya (NOCK) he was not involved in the day to day running of the said organisation.

He went on to say that he did not give any authorisation for the inclusion of any of the persons into the Kenyan delegation team as alleged.

The pre-trial conference will be held December 6, 2018 with all other pending issues set to be canvassed then.
