Rioting UoN students burn down prefab over alleged killing of colleague

Students from the University of Nairobi (UoN) students ran amok on Monday evening protesting the alleged killing of a fellow student by security guards.

Kytte Odeng, reports say, sustained injuries from a run-in with the security guards within the school premises last Wednesday.

He was rushed to the Nairobi Hospital but succumbed to the injuries.

On Monday, almost a week after the incident, irate UoN students ran wild, lit bonfires and set one of the abandoned hostels ablaze.

Videos shared on social media and believed to be from the riots show scores of people believed to be the students lighting fires at the campus.

The student leader Samuel Anyona told the Daily Nation that the deceased was reportedly beaten up by guards who then dumped him at the Central Park- a stone-throw away from the campus.

The incident comes barely weeks after the University was put on the spot over a memo that appeared to heap blame on a rape victim.

A controversial memo sent out to students and authored by the acting director of security appeared to say a student who had been raped by three assailants ‘put herself’ in the position.

According to the memo, the female student had gone on a night out ‘entertained herself at various joints’ before walking back to the university “drunk” and “alone”.
