Road blocked as Kangundo PSV operators protest gang attacks

Matatu operators in Ruai blocked Kangundo Road in protest over rising attacks by a criminal gang.

The gang, known as Omari, operates along Syca, Kayole, Umoja III, Choka and the Eastern bypass  known as Omari targets public service vehicles.

Idle youth from different matatu termini pretend to be passengers waiting for vehicles.

Once a matatu stops to pick or drop a passenger, the gang members demand money from the conductor.

The ‘fee’ ranges from Ksh.20 to 100 and failure to meet their demands are often met with violence.

Francis Maina Mbai, a conductor who worked for Eastern Bypass Sacco, died in hospital on Friday last week, after he was hit with a crude weapon for refusing to give them money.

According to colleagues, , the conductor suffered internal injuries from trauma on his head.

“Even though we have reported some of these youth to Ruai and Kayole Police Stations no action has been taken,” Mr. Michael Muliya, the Eastern Bypass Sacco chairman lamented.

However, Kayole OCPD Joseph Gichangi issued a stern warning to those found culpable.

“Anyone found with crude weapons even knives will be considered a gangster and we will deal with them as required by law,” he said on Monday.

Normal activities later resumed after his assurance that police would deal with the matter.
