Robbers drill into Equity Bank in Kayole, steal millions

Police in Nairobi have launched a manhunt for robbers who drilled through the walls of an Equity Bank Branch in Kayole on Saturday night, making away with millions of shillings.

According to Nairobi County commandant Japheth Koome, an unknown number of people drilled their way through the rear walls of the bank premises.

Armed with gas welding machines, the robbers gained access to the bank’s strong room, clearing the unspecified amount of money.

They also welded through cash deposit units of ATM machines attached to the bank and cleaned them out.

The robbers then took off, leaving behind two gas cylinders. Police also say the robbers disabled CCTV surveillance during the break in.

The bank only reported the incident on Sunday at 3pm.

When reached for comment, Equity Bank head office promised to get back to Citizen TV later in the day as managers were still held up in meetings.

Police are narrowing in on the security guards who have since gone missing.
