Robbers posing as auditors steal Ksh 30M from Equity Bank

Equity Bank lost Ksh 30 million after robbers masquerading as auditors from the head office in Nairobi entered its Othaya Branch and made away with the cash.

It is said that the three robbers entered the bank Friday 6:50AM and made away with the money unnoticed.

Nyeri County police boss Larry Kieng said that one of the bank employees in the branch opened doors for the robbers who were posing as auditors from the bank headquarters after they called him to do so.

Kieng said the bank operation hours are from 8AM to 5PM and the premises are guarded by armed police officers.

“I cannot confirm whether this incident is an inside job or normal robbery,” Kieng said.

He said the robbers then used a Toyota model of a car that they had parked outside the bank to escape.

The incident comes just three days after coffee worth Ksh 100 million was stolen from factories in Nyeri County with police blaming factory administrators and managers.

Forty bags were stolen from the Ndima-Ini factory in Mathira East on Tuesday night.

According to Karatina police boss Matthew Gwiyo, a group of men broke into the factory around 9PM, and used some equipment to cut fence and gain entry into the premises.

Two guards, who were guarding the place at the time of the raid, were arrested to help police with the investigations.

The guards said the thieves tied them up, and then proceeded to the stores where they packed the coffee into bags before they made away with the loot.

The police boss said investigations are underway to establish those involved in robbery of the 30 million shillings.
