Robbers run out of gas as they break into bank vault

An attempt to break into Habib Bank AG Zurich’s vault and make away with millions of shillings failed after the gas they were using to drill through the safe ran out midway.

The robbers, who fled and left the empty gas cylinder together with other wielding materials behind are believed to have accessed the bank through the back entrance. The bank is situated on Nairobi’s Koinang’e Street.

Police say the thugs disabled the bank’s alarm and CCTV cameras and were not in a hurry as they had even carried food to see them through the robbery process.

When the gas ran out, they could not get a replacement so they took off and the break in was not noticed until Monday morning.

Investigations have commenced to establish whether it was an inside job. Police also dusted for fingerprints.
