Fake doctor Mugo wa Wairimu released on bail

Fake doctor Mugo Wa Wairimu has been released on a Ksh 1 million cash bail or a Ksh 5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo accepted his bail application after his lawyer Cliff Ombeta argued that the charges facing him were bailable.

The court, however, cautioned him against contacting prosecution witnesses or the complainants adding that he should deposit his passport in Court.

Last week, Ombeta asked the court to release his client on bail saying the charges leveled against him were ‘bailable’ and that he was not flight risk.

On Friday last week, Mugo was charged with twelve counts including rape, masquerading as a gynaecologist and operating a clinic without valid licenses.

Mugo, who was exposed by Citizen TV, is accused of operating clinics in Nairobi’s Githurai and Zimmerman estates without licence.

Mugo was also charged with administering unknown drugs to a person, unlawfully carrying out the business of a pharmacist yet not registered with the pharmacy and poisons board, stocking and using invalidated medical laboratory reagents and employing an unregistered and unlicensed laboratory technologist.

In addition, he was charged with operating a laboratory without the approval of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board, practicing as unregistered and unlicensed person and possession of irradiation device without licence.

Mugo denied all the charges even as the prosecution made an application asking the court to deny him bail.

Approximately two weeks ago, the court granted investigating officers seven more days to hold him and allow time to finalize investigations into the allegations of sedating and raping his female patients and masquerading as a gynaecologist.

According to the prosecution, there were two key witnesses who are yet to record statements.

After the expose, Mugo went into hiding even as angry residents of Nairobi’s Githurai 44 milled outside the Prestige Healthcare Clinic baying for his blood.

Mugo was later arrested in local restaurant in Limuru.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) had discredited Mugo clinical operations labeling him a quack.

KMPDB CEO Daniel Yumbya said Mugo did not possess the requisite qualifications to be a doctor, leave alone a gynaecologist.

“Mugo is not a member of the board, he is not a doctor. The said individual has not gone through the due process that is a requirement for one to get the accreditation to be a doctor,” he stated.
