Rongo deputy commissioner suspends crackdown on cane sugar

Rongo sub county security team led by the sub county Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Satia has bowed to pressure from local leaders and suspended a crackdown on unlicensed cane sugar widely known as jiggery or sukari nguru.

Rongo security team on Wednesday met local leaders led by North Kamagambo ward representative Richard Solo and agreed to suspend the crackdown on unlicensed jaggery so that the two levels of government can come to an agreement on the matter.

Solo said there is need for consultation between the county and national government before such a policy regulating production of jaggery is implementing, asserting that both levels of government must work together.

He maintained that the livelihoods of the people of Rongo Sub County depend on jaggery and killing the industry will sabotage their economy.

Rongo Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mr Satia said after consulting with area Member of Parliament Hon Dalmas Otieno and North Kamagambo ward representative Mr Solo, they have suspended their crackdown on jaggery as they continue to deliberate on the best way forward.

Satia however appealed to the producers to stop selling their jaggery to chang’aa brewers, adding that they should support the government in its effort to fight illicit brew in the country.
