Rongo teachers threaten mass action over FPE funds

Rongo teachers threaten mass action over FPE funds

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Rongo branch has threatened to lead primary school head teachers for a peaceful demonstration Friday, September 23 if the government fails to release the Free Primary Education Funds for this term and part of last term.

Led by the Rongo branch union Executive Secretary, Thomas Ochiel Awino, the teachers have accused the government of frustrating the primary school heads.

They cautioned the government that they will result to mass action if it fails to release the funds before the end of the week.

Ochiel said that the government only released 14 percent of the FPE fund last term instead of 30 percent, a deficit that has undermined the proper management and running of most schools.

He added that the schools have also not received any monies from the government for this term saying that most schools do not even have chalks among other learning materials.

He reiterated that most activities in the schools are grounded.

Ochiel also pointed out that most support staff employed by schools, including security officers, have withdrawn their services because they have not received their salaries since July.

The Rongo branch KNUT Secretary General said the situation has even compelled school head teachers to ask parents for little money to run the school because the government has failed to perform its role role effectively.
