Ruto: Moi was not perfect but he was a genuine president

Deputy President William Ruto has heaped praise on the late President Daniel Arap Moi while attending the former Head of State’s memorial service.

Ruto said that Moi, without a PhD went on to become a professor of leadership and politics, and his school of ‘fuata Nyayo’ birthed many a Kenyan politician including himself.

“Moi without a PhD went on to be a professor. We ended up being his students in his school of leadership and politics, a school whose motto was ‘fuata nyayo’ ,” Ruto said.

In his tribute, Ruto said Kenyans at large had congregated at the Nyayo National Stadium to celebrate the life of a panafricanist who had consolidated Kenya from where Kenya’s first president left it.

He also noted that while Moi was not perfect, he was a truly genuine president who went out of his way to do the best he could for his country.

Ruto joined active politics in 1997 after flooring Reuben Chesire for the Eldoret North seat and was under the tutelage of the then president Moi.

They would later fall out in 2005 when Ruto expressed interest in gunning for the country’s top seat.

While eulogising the late president, Ruto disclosed how the late former president Daniel Arap Moi picked him as a greenhorn politician and mentored him into the leader he is today.

He reminisced how Moi gifted him and three of his colleagues with a prime plot of land in Eldoret town whose property sale enabled him purchase his first car.

“Moi was a very generous person, he really went out of his way and maybe some traits some of us have of giving we may have learned from him,” said Ruto.
