Ruto Orders Closure of Daadab Refugee Camp

Deputy President William Samoei Ruto said that the relevant bodies have three months, starting today (Saturday), to relocate all the refugees from the camp.

Ruto said that the camp has been suspected of harbouring terrorists who plan and carry out attacks in Kenya.

Speaking in Nyeri, the Deputy President said that should the refugees not be relocated within the given period, the government will take necessary steps to remove them from the area.

Early in the week, leaders from North Eastern Kenya called on the government to shut down the camp or relocate it to Somalia saying that it has been used as a breeding point for terrorists.

Ruto’s directive comes even as more refugees continue flooding the camp especially from the war-torn Somalia.

The directive comes a week after terrorists affiliated to the Al Shabaab militia attack the Garissa University college killing at least 148 and injuring over 100 others.
