Ruto rubbishes calls for referendum

Leaders should stop engaging in divisive politics, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

Speaking in Baringo County on Saturday, Mr Ruto said the current talks about referendum are ill-advised and only meant to divide the country.

He said the Jubilee party has been keen on bringing Kenyans together since 2013, and “now is the time to develop the country”.

“That is why our principal focus is on the Big Four. We cannot be politicking everyday,” said Mr Ruto.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen said it was unfortunate that “some selfish” politicians are putting Kenyans into another campaign mode barely a year going to the polls.

The Senate Majority Leader said Jubilee is against the calls for referendum. “As a party, we are focused on fulfilling the pledges we made to Kenyans. That remains our main goal and it will not change any soon,” said Mr Murkomen.

At the same time, the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator said leaders would be judged by their actions and not by being the child of a prominent person.

“Leadership should be guided by your actions. When we say Mr Ruto will be the President of Kenya in 2022, it is guided by his past actions,” he said, adding that those waiting for Jubilee to break up are dreaming.

Mr Murkomen’s sentiments were echoed by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, Othaya MP Gichuki Mugambi and nominated MP Sammy Seroney who said that they would rally behind Mr Ruto as Kenya’s next President.

The leaders were addressing the public during a fundraiser in Eldama Ravine after the commissioning of the periodic maintenance of the 18-kilometre Makutano-Eldama Ravine road, which is expected to be completed within a year.

Earlier, Mr Ruto launched the Eldama Ravine Technical Training Institute, where he stated that the government was intensifying its support to technical colleges to boost their capacity.

At a previous function in Kajiado County, the DP maintained that Kenya will only move to the middle-income level if technical training is supported.

It is on this basis that he announced that fees for such institutions would be reduced by up-to 50 per cent in two months’ time to increase enrollment. Moreover, he noted that lecturers in technical colleges would be put under a new scheme of service from July to boost their morale.

Also present in the function were Water CS Simon Chelugui, Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis, Buuri MP Rindikiri Murethania, former Tiaty MP Asman Kamama, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, Mogotio MP Daniel Tuitoek, Eldama Ravine MP Moses Lessonet, and EALA MP Winnie Chematia.
