Rwanda, Kenya lead in African Development Bank rating

Rwanda and Kenya have topped the 2014 Africa Development Bank (AfDB) Policy and Institutional Assessment Rating.

Addressing the press in Nairobi, AfDB Regional Director Gabriel Negatu said that Rwanda and Kenya emerged first and third respectively in the 2014 index.

“Rwanda is ranked the highest due to its consistent leadership in the implementation of economic policies,” Negatu said when unveiling the 2015 African Economic Outlook.

The publication was jointly published by the AfDB, European Union, United Nations Development Programme and the Economic Commission for Africa.

He said that Rwanda is a role model for other African states due to its social inclusion polices that have resulted in a large number of women taking decision making positions.

Negatu reported that Kenya performed the best in regional integration and infrastructure development, pointing out that the country needed address traffic jams in urban areas.

“However, the country needs to develop a mass transit system in urban areas in order to reduce traffic congestion,” he said.

UNDP Kenya Economic Advisor Wilmot Reeves said that the East African region will register highest economic growth rates in Africa in 2015.

He said that the East Africa region is projected to grow by 5.6 % compared to 5.5 and 5 % for Central Africa and West Africa respectively.
