SA Court Drops Murder Charges Against Suspected Meyiwas Killer

While delivering the ruling, the magistrate ordered that Zanokuhle Mbatha be released citing lack of sufficient evidence against him to stand trial.

Meyiwa was killed in a robbery incident at his girlfriend's home in the township of Vosloorus east of Johannesburg.

Two men allegedly entered Kelly Khumalo's home on 26 October and demanded mobile phones before shooting Meyiwa after a scuffle.

The goalkeeper's death caused a nationwide outcry with calls for stricter gun laws in a country with one of the highest murder rates in the world.

The day after the attack, police offered a reward of $23,000 to anyone with information about the incident and further released images of two men suspected of killing Meyiwa.

It is not clear if the released suspect will still form part of ongoing investigations.
