Safaricom Signs Security Network Contract With Govt

The 5 year project will cost 14.9 billion shillings and will also include the installation of cameras in the two cities to provide real-time footage to the National Police Operations Centre.

Speaking after the signing of the deal, interior cabinet secretary Joseph Ole Lenku said the secure communications and surveillance project would greatly enhance security in the country by providing security agents with the capability to monitor and deter crime.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore lauded the project saying it was pioneering achievement, not just for Kenya but also for Africa.

The contract signing was attended by Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Joseph Ole Lenku, Principal Secretary Interior Ambassador (Dr.) Monica Juma, Principal Secretary National Treasury Dr. Kamau Thugge, Inspector General David Kimaiyo and, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

The signing has taken place on the same day as a demo in Nairobi protesting rising cases of insecurity in Kenya.
