Sylvia Mulinge back at Safaricom after Tanzania blocks appointment

Safaricom has reappointed Sylvia Mulinge as a director in charge of Special Projects.

Ms. Mulinge had exited the company to take up new assignment as Chief Executive Officer of Vodacom Tanzania. Her appointment in Dar es Salaam scheduled to take effect on June 1st 2018.

However this became a cropper after the neighbouring country’s authorities delayed in issuing her with a work permit.

In an email to staff seen by Citizen Digital, CEO Bob Collymore said Mulinge’s appointment will take effect from 1st October 2018.

“In this role, she will report directly to me and will be responsible or spearheading our commercial revival and help us deliver our strategy,’’ reads a section of the communication to staff.

Ms. Mulinge will also be required in the short term to work with commercial teams to “restore customer trust and loyalty.”

Early this month, Vodacom announced the appointment of Hisham Hendi as an acting CEO. This was to fill in the gap “until such time the on-boarding process of the substantive managing director is completed.”

The hurdle by Mulinge in acquiring relevant work permits observers will be quick to point exemplifies the strenuous relations between Kenya and its neighbour.

The two countries have had trade wars running into years with attempts to resolve them always hitting a dead end. This despite the The East African Community common market allowing for free movement of people and locally manufactured goods.

Sylvia Mulinge joined Safaricom in 2006 from Unilever where she worked as brand manager. At the time of her exit, she was a director in charge of consumer business.
