Samburu leaders threaten to abandon Jubilee over security operation

Samburu County leaders have threatened to abandon the Jubilee government if it fails to address the alleged torturing and killing of Laikipia residents by armed police officers under the guise of containing banditry attacks.

Speaking on Thursday led by Samburu Governor, Moses Lenolkulal, the leaders, said the operation has been politicized by local leaders who want to get into power through the backdoor.

The leaders said that the police operations going on in Laikipia are targeting particular communities living in the area and Lenolkulal stated that the operation, which was meant to disarm the residents, has turned into a torture exercise calling upon the government to stop it immediately.

They further accused the officers of taking away their national identification and voters cards.

“Human and livestock lives have been lost, pastoralists depend on livestock, killing their animals is like skinning them alive,” he said.

Samburu West Member of Parliament, Lati Lelelit, asked the government, through the President, to immediately recall the operations. He also said that Samburu top leadership would be meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta over the issue.

“Among the things we will request the President is the compensation of the lost livestock and destroyed property,” Lelelit said.

Alois Lentoimaga, Samburu North Legislator, on the other hand said that the operation in Laikipia should be moved to Samburu North which is more prone to cattle rustling among other related crimes.
