Samburu women get cash, phones from gov’t

Over 1,600 women from Samburu County are beneficiaries of a Ksh 1.8 billion project backed by the national government.

The Samburu women have been swamped with grants, mobile phones, NHIF covers for their families and an upkeep fee of Ksh 1,500 every month.

A grantee, Joy Lekaldero, is optimistic that the Boma programme will wilt marginalisation of women in the county.

“We have suffered here in Samburu because we were not empowered in any way but we are hopeful that with Ksh 25,000 grant, a mobile phone and NHIF card that we received from the government, our lives will transform,” she said.

Speaking at the program launch at Naiborkeju area, the project’s deputy country director, Almed Kura, affirmed that the selected women have the capacity to run business enterprises, asserting they have been effectually trained, funded and mentored.

Helen Dalton, the Regional Director for Boma in East Africa projected that the programme will change the lives of up to 15, 000 women and children in two years.

The project is targeting 27 locations in Samburu County for a two years pilot phase after its successful implementation in Marsabit County a decade ago.
