School boy loses teeth to bullying

The family of a 15-year-old boy is seeking justice after he lost two of his teeth in a fight with two other students at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Kandara, Murang’a County.

The form two student was among a group of 15 boys who were roughed up by older students and ruthlessly beaten up on March 5th this year.

According to the boy, the incident took place at 9PM after the evening preps when he was attacked by the group citing disrespect from him.

He reported the matter to the teacher on duty who noted down the names of the attackers and told him to go to sleep.

He bled profusely during the night as some of his friends helped him to control the bleeding. He was later to be granted permission to seek medical attention at a Kandara medical center.

He collapsed by the roadside and was rescued by a passer-by who took him to hospital after recording a statement at Kandara Police Station.

“When I told him my story, the well-wisher assisted me with a mobile phone and I called my mother informing her about what had happened,” the boy said.

The mother expressed disappointment with how the matter was handled by the school administration and how her child was not attended to even after bleeding the whole night.

“My son has to wear braces which were very expensive as most of his upper teeth are loose and had to stay at home for two weeks to heal,” Esther Njeri, the mother to the school boy, said.

When they visited the school seeking a transfer later on, the teachers locked themselves in the office fearing that journalists might have accompanied the boy and his mother.

The District Education Officer, Kamau Ruitha, said they received the information about the incident on March 14th and investigations are ongoing.
