School, Community In War Over Dam Use In Siaya

By Musalia Wycliffe.

The row erupted after Ng’iya Girls’ High School staffs allegedly attempted to de-silt the dam without consulting the community.

The community argues that the school has no mandate to start digging the dam without the authority of the residents.

The community argues that the dam, which they rely on for water, is a community property that must be taken care of by every body from the area.

The community further argues that the school has been pumping water from the dam even in the dry period without considering the effects the low water levels will have on the residents.

Area Members of the County Assembly Pius Ombio (North Alego) and Owiti Osuri (South East Alego) have appealed to the communities and the school to hold a crisis meeting in order to chant a way forward and avoid conflicts.

Osuri has now asked the school to stop any activities on the dam until an agreement is reached by the affected parties.

On his part, Mr. Ombio said that he has already planned a meeting for the county and national governments officials to resolve the issue.
