Children from public schools will now have their lessons broadcast on TV, radio and YouTube after they were ordered to stay at home following the coronavirus pandemic.

Education CS George Magoha said lessons for 15million learners who are now at home will begin on March 23, 2020.

“In partnership with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), the ministry will broadcast radio programmes daily from Monday to Friday through Radio Taifa and English Service,” he said.

Radio Taifa lessons are expected to run from 10am to 11am while English Service programmes will be aired from 9:15am to 12pm and again from 2pm to 4pm.

The lessons will also be broadcast on Iftini FM and Transworld in Garissa, Mandera and Wajir.

For lessons on television, the ministry will be broadcasting lessons on Edu Channel which is available on the Signet free-to-air channel.

YouTube lessons will be made available on the channel Edu TV Kenya: lessons will be live-streamed and also recorded for future access.

Digital content that is approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) is also available on the Kenya Education Cloud through www.kec.ac.ke

“The ministry invites all telecommunication firms and media houses to work in partnership with the government to avail education solutions during this period,” CS Magoha said.

Meanwhile, private learning institutions have already began online classes for students at home.

A spot check showed that some are using digital learning tools such as Google Classroom while others are making use of Zoom.
