School’s regulations should be reviewed – MP

The Ministry of Education has been challenged to review its regulations on school discipline to curb the rising cases of school unrest.

Bumula Member of Parliament Bonface Otsula said the continued school unrest being witnessed across the country will only be resolved if the Ministry of Education officials interact with school principals and deliberate on emerging challenges school heads face in managing institutions.

Otsula was speaking when he visited Khasoko Secondary school after fire razed down a domitory destroying property worth thousands of shillings.

He stated that the deteriorating discipline in schools was as a result of vesting more powers to the Ministry offivials instead of teachers who directly deal with learners.

He further blamed a section of parents for the declining discipline in schools saying that despite parents being the primary initiators of discipline in learners, most of them had failed on their responsibility and left everything to the teachers who are already overwhelmed by the high number of students.

The MP took a swipe at the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Jacob Kaimenyi whom he said has failed to provide proper leadership in his docket.
