Schools in Solai reopen after Patel dam tragedy

Schools in Solai, Nakuru County on Monday resumed normal activities a week after the devastating Patel Dam tragedy claimed the lives of 47 people and displaced 2,500.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Nyakinywa Primary School head teacher said classes in the various schools resumed through a counseling programme initiative by the PCEA church cater to the traumatised pupils, teachers and parents.

“I am very thankful to the church programme that has been initiated since I have seen a big turn out of 400 students out of the registered 600. I’m also thankful to the parents and teachers who showed up for the session,” said the headteacher.

The school administrator further implored teachers and the remaining pupils to show up for classes so that they’re not left behind.

Boards of Management of the various public schools in the area have also decided to borrow finances to the tune of Ksh.100,000 to help them put up temporary structures for offices and latrines for pupils.

The Solai dam tragedy claimed the lives of 14 children; most between Standard One to Five.
