Two dead, 21 rescued in Lake Victoria boat tragedy

Two children were confirmed dead while 21 people escaped narrowly after two boats collided Wednesday morning in Lake Victoria.

Fatou Bensouda, 2, and Eda Anyango, 4, were travelling with their mother to Kisumu a the passenger boat.

According to the Beach Management Unit, the passenger boat collided with a stationary fishermen’s boat, which resulted in the passenger boat capsizing.

The passenger boat reportedly had 23 people onboard. No casualties were reported from the fishermen’s boat.

The 4am accident occurred between Kiwa and Remba islands.

According to police, fishermen from Kiwa island helped rescue the survivors while residents of Migingo and Remba islands also assisted in the rescue efforts.

Speaking to journalists this morning, Suba Member of Parliament John Mbadi sent his condolences to the families of the bereaved.

The MP also suggested that night trips on the lake be banned.
