Security boss blames drugs for students unrest

Unrest and destruction being witnessed in most secondary schools across the country is as a result of easy access to hard drugs by students.

Speaking on Monday in a leaders meeting held in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, Deputy County Commissioner Simon Mwangi said that  majority of students who incite their colleagues are either on hard drugs or abusing other harmful substances.

Mwangi argued that these students always cause mayhem in order to be sent home where they go to get more stock for the remaining part of the term.

According to security officer, the education stakeholders have a collective responsibility of ensuring that schools are drug free zones. He argued that students too much freedom to an extent of abusing it by using hard drugs and other substances making them unruly.

The Deputy County Commissioner urged parents and the community to be alert and report any suspicious behavior by learners to the authorities for action.

“I urge everybody here, and more so parents and members of the community, to be extra vigilant in order to ensure that there is nobody supplying drugs to students.”

County Speaker Patrick Mariru called on parents to talk to their children more and educate them on the effects of ‘bad behaviours’.

Meanwhile, students from Ndururumo High School were on Tuesday sent home indefinitely after a section of them turned unruly Monday night following the suspension of their 15 colleagues for causing disturbance in the school.

In Narok, a dormitory in Narok High School was reduced to ashes Monday night and property worth millions of shillings destroyed in a suspected arson case.

According to Narok Deputy OCPD , Charles Ouma, the fire that started at around 8:30 was discovered by one of the student who raised an alarm.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

On Tuesday morning, Kibiku Boys Secondary School in Ngong, Kajiado County were sent home after allegedly setting ablaze two science laboratories.
