Security heightened at Likoni Ferry after terror alert

Security was on Thursday beefed up at the Likoni ferry in Mombasa following intelligence reports that the Al Shabaab extremists were plotting an attack on the vital Kilindini Harbour crossing channel.

Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim said that security officers, both in uniform and civilian clothing, have since been deployed to ensure maximum security at the critical installation.

Maalim assured users that security measures have been heightened and thorough screening of both people and vehicles going through the channel has been effected.

Speaking during a security meeting at Fort Jesus, the County Commissioner, warned the Islamic fighters and their sympathizers that the government will catch up with them soon.

He called on the Tourist Police Unit in Fort Jesus and Old Town to immediately address the rising cases of insecurity in the area after a group of youth was reported as terrorizing the residents.

“The youth said to be terrorizing the residents of Mombasa County and those targeting officials of Nyumba Kumi will be flushed out and face the full force of the law,” noted Maalim.

Mvita Member of Parliament, Abdulswamad Nassir, called on the police to work with the locals to ensure suspected terror groups are flushed out.
