Security sector committed to roadmap to peaceful 2022 elections, Matiangi says

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has challenged independent institutions including the Judiciary to up their game ahead of the 2022 elections.

He warned that the political ground is gradually changing and institutions are mandated to maintain peace in the country.

“We in the security sector are committed to the Roadmap to a Peaceful 2022 Elections and will walk the talk to ensure its realised. Moving forward, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) will coordinate with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) officials nationwide as they make preparations to deliver elections,” he said.

Dr. Matiang’i was speaking on Thursday during the NCIC’s launch of the Roadmap for Peaceful 2022 Elections.

The Interior CS criticized the political class accusing them of engaging in incitement and dividing Kenyans.

The CS warned against use of social media as a tool of negative mobilization, urging the Communications Authority to probe such incidents for action.

He expressed confidence that the 2022 general elections will be peaceful saying Kenyans will not be hoodwinked to turn to violence.

His sentiments were echoed by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho who said measures have been to deter any occurrence of violence during elections.

On his part, NCIC chairman Samuel Kobia also issued a stern warning to politicians against inciting Kenyans ahead of the 2022 general elections.

Rev Kobia vowed that they will discharge their mandate without fear or favor noting that Kenyans have suffered because of violence more so after the 2007 poll.

He said as a commission they will ensure Kenya remains peaceful before and after the election period.

The clergyman further challenged Kenyans to embrace intercultural coexistence.

European Union Deputy Ambassador to Kenya Katrin Hagemman offered assurance that they would support the NCIC in ensuring peaceful elections are held.

The envoy however reiterated that preventing electoral violence the duty of all Kenyans including international partners.

She said they will also focus on supporting civil societies which also have a cardinal role in securing peaceful coexistence.
