Senate forms Special Committee to probe Governor Sambojas impeachment

The Senate has formed a special committee to investigate the allegations by Taita Taveta County Assembly that led to impeachment of Governor Granton Samboja last week.

Senate Deputy Speaker Prof. Kithure Kindiki acknowledged that the Senate has received a report from the Taita Taveta County Assembly indicating that they had impeached the governor on various grounds among them gross office misconduct, failure to hold annual state of the county addresses among others.

The 12-member committee is comprised of Senators George Khaniri, Njeru Ndwiga, Ochillo Ayacko, Agnes Zani, Aaron Cheruiyot, Charles Kibiru, Boniface Kabaka, Lelngwe Ltumbesi, Beatrice Kwamboka, Farhiya Ali, Naomi Waqo.

The special committee is also expected to invite various stakeholders to submit their allegations during the investigations.

Last week Governor Samboja got a relief after the High Court in Nairobi temporarily suspended the county assembly’s decision to remove him from office.

The motion to impeach Governor Samboja was tabled by Rong’e ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Harris Keke and supported by 30 out of the 33 MCAs; the remaining 3 were absent.

The MCAs cited various reasons for kicking him out among them failure to submit to the county assembly an annual report on the implementation status of the county policies and plans.

They further accused him of failing to address the county assembly as required, misappropriation of funds as well as misleading the people of Taita Taveta in dissolving the county.
