Senate Proposes Sh293B Award to Counties

According to the Senate deputy speaker, Kembi Gitura, on April 2 Senate released the new figure after a sitting that majored on revenue share across counties.

Speaking during a mass service at St. Peters Catholic church in Mugoiri, Kembi, who is also Murang'a County Senator, said that the money was expected to be put into substantial projects.

Kembi added that it was unfortunate that some governors, through the EACC, were mentioned as being involved in corrupt dealings that involved the alleged squandering of county funds.

The deputy speaker however noted that the Senate shall be extra keen on county expenditures and will not shy away to crack the whip on governors where funds are misused.

He said that it was in their mandate to offer the oversight role and they will therefore continue criticizing and summoning governors to the Senate to explain themselves.

STERN WARNING TO GOVERNORS

Kembi further issued a stern warning to governors saying that it will not be business as usual for those whose names shall be implicated in corruption and money related irregularities.

He added that governors already mentioned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission should not only step aside but also resign to safeguard the dream of devolution.

At the same time the Senator was quick to note that introduction of Ward Development Funds would facilitate the distribution of the county funds to the grassroots through Members of County Assembly (MCA’s).

Kembi said that for the funds to reach the intended purpose, the trustees should work diligently, observe accountability and enhance the spirit of devolution.

Kembi noted that the Constituency Development Fund has done a brilliant job, adding that Ward Development Funds can also do well in the re-distribution of funds to the grassroots.
