Senator Kangata apologises, says letter to President Kenyatta was leaked to the media

Senate Majority Whip Irungu Kang’ata now claims that his letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta declaring that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is unpopular in the Central Kenya region was leaked by a third party.

Senator Kang’ata, however, maintains that the issues in the letter are substantive, adding that he hopes they will be remedied.

“Kindly though the letter dated 30th December is authentic, I didn’t give it to the media. Someone else who had been copied did. I apologise for that. With the benefit of hindsight. I should have copied no one else. Trust substantive issues raised in the letter will be remedied,” said the Senate Majority Whip on Monday.

In the bold letter covering several other issues, the Senator says only two in 10 people in Central Kenya support the BBI, a finding he said is based on his own personal observations over the Christmas holiday.

He further told the President that a ruling party candidate could be defeated in the forthcoming election of Nairobi Governor, saying such an outcome would embarrass the government and undermine its legislative agenda in the Houses of Parliament.

The letter sparked mixed reactions from Mt. Kenya leaders, with 10 Governors from the region coming out to rubbish the document.

The county bosses faulted the Murang’a Senator over what they termed as breach of protocol in the manner in which he addressed the Head of State.

“As a senior member of parliament and Jubilee party, Hon Kangata should have followed official government structures and procedures in his address to HE the President. Such breach of protocol is unacceptable. It raises questions why a senior member of the government leadership in parliament would choose this cheap populist method to address this issue to HE the President whose office is just a few steps away from parliament,” said the Governors in a joint statement.

They added that while they acknowledge some of the issues raised by Kang’ata, they believe it is very premature to judge the BBI Bill.
