Senator Nyongo saves journalists during CORDs anti-IEBC protest
Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o came to the rescue of anguished journalists during CORD’s anti-IEBC protest on Monday by providing them with water to wash off the teargas.
In an unprecedented turn of events, the Senator, who had opted to stay on after police officers lobbed teargas to prevent CORD supporters from accessing IEBC offices, invited journalists to wash off the teargas, sharing a bottle of water with them.
Senator Nyong’o further offered the journalists a word of encouragement saying that being teargassed was all part of a good day’s work.
Speaking to the press later, Nyong’o scolded the police for using unnecessary force in dispersing the protesters saying the High Court had last week granted CORD permission to hold the protest.
He noted that CORD supporters had been peaceful throughout the protest and the chaos witnessed during Monday’s anti-IEBC protests should be blamed on police action.
Close to 100 police officers were deployed at Anniversary Towers to prevent CORD from accessing IEBC offices during their protests.
Three water cannons were also parked near the offices with several police officers on horsebacks also present to keep off the protesters from accessing the offices.
The rather peaceful protest turned chaotic after some protesters pelted stones at police officers who were manning the gate to Anniversary Towers prompting them to lob teargas to disperse them.
Just after the first teargas was lobbed, CORD leaders and legislators were whisked into their vehicles and driven off as the other protesters engaged police in running battles.
