Senator wants former Councillors paid Ksh.1.5M each

Laikipia Senator John Kinyua has revived debate on the send off package that should be awarded to former Councillors who served for at least one term since the  year 1963 when the country gained independence.

On Thursday, the Laikipia Senator moved a motion proposing that the former ward administrators be awarded a one-off honorarium of Ksh.1.5 million.

The motion also proposes that the former Councillors be paid a monthly pension of at least Ksh.30,000.

“The recommendations were based on the fact that former Councillors did not receive fixed emoluments and experienced disparities with regard to access to pension services, which made it difficult to fairly and equitably determine each Councillor’s rightful benefits,” reads part of the motion.

The Senate Committee on Labor and Social Welfare had in February 2016 made similar recommendations but this is yet to be implemented.
