Senators Rubbish Governors Call For Referendum

G.G said the Bill, which makes senators the chairpersons of the newly created county development committees with governors becoming secretaries, was fundamental to ensuring proper utilization of county funds.

He appealed to governors not to fear being supervized by the Senate, adding this was not the time to call for a referendum.

G.G was addressing the media on Friday at Muthe-Ngera Area in Laikipia-West Constituency during the burial of his step-mother Serah Wairimu Kariuki.

Elsewhere, Kericho county Senator Charles Keter has told-off governors over their call for a referendum to amend the constitution to have more funds disbursed to counties.

Speaking in Litein Town in Bureti Constituency, Keter said the governors were not sincere with their push for the referendum, adding the current 42% allocation which has been disbursed to counties, was done without the amendment of the constitution.

He added it was not the right time for the amendments, saying the same could be done during the 2017 general election through insertion of a clause seeking the amendments.

Keter added that the money which could have been spent for the exercise will be diverted to development projects.
