Sengwer Wants Court To Stop Embobut Evictions

Justice Silas Munyao gave the community the go ahead to oppose the evictions from the forest by the Elgeyo Marakwet County government.

 

Alfred Nyairo, the attorney representing the Sengwer community says the community will file a suit seeking to stop the evictions from the forest.

 

The lawyer is suing the Attorney General, the office of the Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner and the officer in charge of forest conservation in the area.

 

The case will come up in the on the 11th March.

 

The land has been the ancestral home of the marginalized hunter-gatherer Sengwer community.

 

Authorities moved to evict people living in the forest as a result of drying up of rivers whose source is the forest.
