Senior cop sustains gunshot wounds in Isebania robbery incident: DCI

A senior cop sustained gunshot wounds on Thursday night as he led his team members to a crime scene in Isebania, Migori County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Inspector Daniel Karani Muriungi and other officers had responded to a distress call when the incident occurred.

They had arrived at Mairi Complex where a robbery was taking place and were met with gunfire.

“Unbeknownst to the officers, a five-man gang that was armed to the teeth with all manner of weapons had staged a robbery within the complex, maiming and robbing businessmen off their hard earned cash,” the DCI said on Twitter.

A fierce shootout is reported to have ensued pitting the officers against the robbers.

The gunmen however managed to flee from the scene leaving a trail of blood behind them.

“The assailants had already inflicted head injuries to a shopkeeper namely Hassan Osman and his customer Mohammed Ismail using machetes. They were rushed to BNM Hospital in Isebania by well wishers, where they are currently undergoing treatment,” the DCI added.

Inspector Muriungi who is said to have sustained gunshot wounds was also treated and discharged in ‘fair condition’.

The DCI has indicated that a contingent of officers drawn from Migori is on the trail of the suspects as others comb the scene to collect samples that could help identify them.
