Senior DCI officer among two killed after car swept by flash floods in Kericho

A senior police officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is among two people who were killed after their car was swept by flash floods at Kipkelion trading centre in Kericho County.

According to Kipkelion Ward MCA Anthony Ruto, the officer was with a female companion when his saloon car was swept away while attempting to cross the flooded area near Mercy Girls High School to his house on the other side of the town.

The car was, during the Friday night incident, overwhelmed by the waters and swept downstream before being completely immersed in water.

Members of the public attempted to rescue the two but were overwhelmed by the strength of the water and a blackout which rendered the area completely dark.

They were forced to wait until the water subsided and the vehicle was spotted downstream.

The body of the female occupant was found in the car while that of the DCI officer was found almost 200 meters away.

The area residents assisted police officers in retrieving the bodies of the deceased which were later taken to the Kericho sub-county hospital mortuary.

The MCA added that the flash floods were occasioned by heavy downpour which pounded the area for over three hours, further appealing to the Railways Cooperation to assist them in constructing a tunnel to ease the flow of water.
