Serial eyewitness Dennis Muigai Ngengi jailed

Dennis Muigai Ngengi, the man who claimed to have witnessed two-high profile accidents last year, has been sentenced to one-and-half years in prison for impersonating a military officer.

Appearing before Kwale Resident Magistrate Patrick Wambugu, Muigai was charged with impersonating a captain of the Kenya Defence Forces in Ukunda, Kwale County in 2015.

He pleaded guilty to the count and was sentenced to jail with no option of fine.

Muigai hit headlines after appearing at the scene of the accident that killed former Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru in November last year.

Two weeks prior to the tragic accident he was spotted at the scene of the Lake Nakuru helicopter crash where five people died.

It would later emerge that Muigai was a wanted man and had at least eight other pending cases.

The offences which range from stealing, malicious damage, obtaining money in false pretense to personation were recorded in various police stations across the country.

In an internal memo to the Director of Criminal Investigations, the principal officer in charge of criminal registry, Patrick Ndunda, said all the eight previous cases against Muigai had no result of trial and had been using different names.

As per the records from the criminal registry, the crimes were committed as far back as 1989, 1998 and 1999 with the more recent one being in 2009 in Baricho, Kirinyaga County.
