Seven Chinese nationals detained by a Meru court

Seven Chinese nationals accused of being in the country illegally and dealing with illegal business were on Friday, February 24 remanded by a Meru Court.

The court issued the ruling following an application by the prosecution in pretext that there was Chinese-English interpreter.

They appeared before Meru Senior Principal Magistrate, Stella Abuya, and faced four charges but the plea was deferred for lack of an interpreter.

Abuya remanded them until Monday when the case will be mentioned to confirm if the court will have gotten an interpreter.

Among the charges the seven are facing is being in the country illegally, engaging in business without a permit as non-citizens, employing people believed to be committing an immigration offense and engaging in illegal export of raw macadamia without a license from Kenya.

Defense lawyer, David Thangicia, filed an application before Abuya so as to have the foreigners released on a lenient bond or cash bail.

The defense asked the court to authorize the prosecution to supply them with copies of charge sheet and all relevant evidence that the prosecution intends to use during the trial.

Prosecution Counsel, Claire Murithi, however, opposed the defense application saying they were relying on affidavit sworn by Meru Police Station OCS.

The court granted the Prosecution request and ordered the foreigners be detained at Meru Police Station until Monday to enable completion of investigations.
