Seven high school girls in court over arson

Seven girls from Matuu High School in Machakos were on Monday arraigned at Kithimani Law Courts and charged with arson.

The students denied the charges of burning two dormitories in the school after they appeared before Kithimani Senior Resident Magistrate Martha Opanga and were each released on a bond of Sh100,000.

The girls are alleged to have torched two dormitories in the school worth Sh10 million last month.

The case will be heard again on August 17, 2015.

This comes almost two weeks after Stephjoy Girls High School in Kikuyu area, Kiambu County was closed indefinitely after students razed down a dormitory in protest of the administration’s management.

It was reported that the dormitory, which accommodates 90 students, was set ablaze using potassium permanganate.

The school management linked the incident to what they said was a week-long tension ahead of the impending end term examinations that were scheduled for last week Monday.
