Seven Kavonokia sect members arrested, claim census is satanic
Seven members of the Kavonokia sect were on Wednesday night arrested in Tharaka Nithi for refusing to give information to enumerators.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the sect members in Gatue refused to be enumerated claiming that the process is satanic .
They further insisted that ‘they will be counted in heaven’.
The Kavonokia sect is also renowned for their controversial stance against ‘modern’ medicine and courtship.
In August 2018, three Kavonokia sect members were arrested after they blocked public health officials from administering the polio vaccine on their children.
Police officers from Kajiado who accompanied the health officials were going door to door to educate parents on the need for children to be vaccinated.
However, the three still refused citing religious beliefs that are against modern medicine.
In 2014, police officers and health officials had to storm homes of some of the sect members to forcefully administering the polio vaccine on their children.
