Seven killed, multiple injured in grisly road accident

Seven people have been killed and 15 others injured after a PSV vehicle they were travelling with was involved in an accident at Ndara in Taita Taveta County along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

It is believed that the fatal accident occurred when the 14-seater matatu was involved in a head on collision with a Nairobi-bound truck.

Confirming the incident, Taita Taveta Traffic Commander, Michael Murethi said that the matatu – which was travelling from Voi Town to Kasighau, was overloaded with 22 passengers, some of whom were students going for their August holidays.

But according to an eye witness, the PSV matatu driver tried to overtake on the wrong side.

“The matatu was overtaking on the wrong side and unfortunately collided with an oncoming trailer. About four people died on the spot while others died on the way to hospital,” the eye-witness told Citizen Digital.

The injured have been transferred to Moi Referral Hospital in Voi while the bodies of the deceased were removed to the hospital’s mortuary.
