Seven musicians killed in Nakuru-Eldoret highway accident
Seven musicians from the popular Kenene international band, a well known Kalenjin music group, died on Saturday night in a grisly road accident at Maraba near Total along Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
The seven, five men and two women, perished after a Toyota Probox they were travelling in collided head on with truck heading to Nakuru at around 7.30pm. The probox was headed to Hill tea, Timboroa.
Popular singer Weldon Cheruiyot died in the accident.
Confirming the incident, Molo Base Commander Moses Nderitu said the probox was trying to overtake two other vehicles before it collided with the oncoming truck.
The artistes were set to perform at Hill tea in the evening where hundreds had turned up for the show.
The incident caused a huge traffic snarl up on both sides of the highway as police and locals tried to remove the bodies in the wrecked probox.
Bodies of the seven were moved to Molo hospital mortuary. The driver of the truck and his loader escaped with injuries.
Kenene International is one of the most popular Kalenjin bands, with hits such as Samantha dominating the airwaves.
