Seven perish in Salgaa accident

Seven people were confirmed dead and six others were seriously injured in a grisly road accident involving a lorry and a matatu near Salgaa on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Sunday night.

According to eyewitnesses, the 10.30pm accident occurred after the lorry lost control and swerved off the road as its driver tried to avoid hitting a fuel tanker from behind, in the process ramming into the PSV vehicle that was moving towards the opposite direction.

The matatu driver and the driver of the lorry were among the victims who perished.

The accident is also reported to have occurred just a few hours after a 34-seater minibus rammed into a five-seater car at Greensteds area along the Nakuru- Nairobi highway, killing two people.

Witnesses say the driver of the private car was attempting to overtake when it was hit from the side by the bus, sending it rolling several times.

The Greensteds accident survivors were rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Gilgil and the bodies of the deceased moved to Umash Funeral Home.

Five people escaped with life threatening injuries and were rushed to Nakuru County Level Five Hospital for treatment while the bodies were moved to Nakuru County Public Mortuary.

In January, leaders from Nakuru County led by nominated Senator Liza Chelule and Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto resolved to bury the hatchet and work closely with Salgaa residents to address the high number of road accidents reported in the area.

The deputy governor assured the residents that projects that had been planned for including the construction of a lorry parking bay, repair of drainage systems and erection of street lighting had already been tendered to a tune of Ksh13.1 million.

The deputy governor added that the lorry parking project would be constructed at a cost of Ksh6 million.
