Seven students charged with attempted arson in Marakwet

Seven students of St. Peters Marakwet Boys in Elgeyo Marakwet County were on Tuesday charged with attempted arson for allegedly trying to burn a dormitory and destroying property at the school.

Appearing before Iten Senior Principal Magistrate Hezron Nyaberi, the students were charged that on the night of September 26, 2018 they attempted to set ablaze a dormitory estimated to be worth Ksh.2.8 million.

They denied the charged and were each released on a bond of Ksh.100,000 with a surety of a similar amount, or Ksh.20,000 cash bail.

The students, all aged below 18, also faced a second count of destroying 15 mattresses and eight blankets worth Ksh. 50,000.

The court directed that the accused be taken to Juvenile remand to await trial should they fail to pay the bond.
